Italian-inspired Vancouver Kitchen Renovation
We’re proud to announce that one of our latest kitchen renovations in Vancouver was featured in the March 2023 edition of House & Home magazine! While the Mauzo Residence is a modern home, the owners wanted a kitchen renovation that embodied the rustic charm of an Italian farmhouse. They turned to the owner of PURE Design, Ami McKay, and our Vancouver interior design team to bring their vision to life. She was asked to design a spacious, welcoming kitchen reflecting the client’s family heritage. Mauro’s father is from the Isernia region of Italy and has passed down his love for spending time in the kitchen making meals and memories with the family.
A Kitchen with Character
As the project’s interior designer, Ami’s first challenge was to create character and charm in a relatively new kitchen. To achieve this, Ami selected materials and elements to enhance the space and provide a sense of history and warmth. The clients’ must-haves included lots of counter space, Italian appliances, a meat slicer, a coffee bar, and ample storage for their canning equipment. Ami and the client chose a classic checkerboard patterned floor with large-scale porcelain tiles in grey and white. Calcutta Viola marble countertops were selected to enhance the Italian theme of the kitchen renovation, and Italian lime plaster treatment was applied to the vent hood with a marble accent for a touch of sophistication.
Ami opted for brass island fixtures and brass-lined pendants to enhance the Vancouver kitchen’s visual appeal, which blends seamlessly with the colour palette, as well as the natural hues of the Pacific Northwest. The warm, earthy tones of light greys, whites, and light wood millwork help create an inviting atmosphere.
Form and Function
Aside from aesthetics, functionality was also a critical consideration in the renovation design. As an interior designer, Ami always looks for ways to make her clients’ lives easier. The kitchen features two dishwashers, a broom closet tucked into the cabinet, a pot filler, and a six-burner cooktop, all chosen to enhance the kitchen’s functionality and make cooking a breeze. The Mauzo Residence’s kitchen renovation is a perfect example of how to blend modern functionality with rustic charm. The overall design reflects the client’s Italian heritage right here in Vancouver, while the practical design elements make it a joy to cook in. The resulting kitchen is a warm and inviting space that provides a perfect setting for cooking Italian feasts, including pasta and pizza. This kitchen is an ideal tribute to the family’s Italian roots.
